Ljova’s Extra Trout Variations, live from the Musikverein in Vienna

What do you play as an encore after Schubert’s “Trout Quintet”? During my first or second year of studies at The Juilliard School I had the fortune of playing this piece as a violist with Lera Auerbach at the piano and Rafael DeStella on bass. As an encore, I wrote a series of extra helpings, three more variations on the unforgettable tune, to send everyone home. These were played only once by us at Paul Hall — and now, to my great surprise, resurrected by the Altenberg Trio Vienna with special guests Dominik Wagner and Gerhard Marschner in the (!!) Musikverein Wien! What a treasure to have this recording and beautiful performance.
