Dear Friends – this Friday at 7pm, join me at Bargemusic for a concert of music by my dad, composer Alexander Zhurbin!
Though he may be best known for his musicals, film scores and popular songs, my dad has continued to compose concert music throughout his career, with several operas, ballets, chamber music, and no fewer than eight symphonies in his catalogue. The concert on the Barge will feature soprano Sharon Harms performing his “Three Madrigals” on texts by Shakespeare with pianist Steve Beck, who will also play the US premiere of a portion of my dad’s 8th Symphony. I will be there to open the concert with the “Fine Fantasy for Fadolín Solo”, a virtuostic piece he wrote for me during the early pandemic days.
Please come to hear and celebrate my dad’s concert music. He would say “academic music” to make it sound more serious – I would disagree. It’s whimsical, theatrical, beautiful, and fun.
All this — and the most breathtaking view of Brooklyn Bridge and Lower Manhattan!
POST-CONCERT UPDATE:
Unfortunately, Sharon Harms had to bow out due to illness, and instead of the three Shakespeare Madrigals, my mom Irena Ginzburg made her surprise Bargemusic debut, singing a few of the songs that she co-wrote with my dad. Here are some pictures!
