watch a video of the world premiere:
For Mothers (2024) “For Mothers” is a short piece for viola and cello, composed by a dad of two teenage boys. It’s a dedication, an homage, a bow of gratitude to my mother, my wife, my mother-in-law, our grandmothers, to all of the courageous mothers in this world. It’s also a dedication to the persistent image of children being born in times of unrest and societal struggle. We look to the next generation as the peacemakers, we pray for their wisdom, health and safety, that their times may know no prejudice or war –– but sadly, history has a short repertoire…. I hope that this piece will pass along this feeling of turbulence, devotion, despair, and above it all, love. Thank you to Hannah Rose Nicholas for continuing our musical collaboration with this commission, and to both her and Alexander Hersh for a beautiful premiere! |
