Ljova
The December program for our family-friendly series “Out of Leftovers” focuses on the songs we’ve learned from our grandparents. Ljova’s paternal grandmother, Ada Zhurbin, would have turned 99 this December 1st. Working as an engineer during the day in the Soviet Union, she kept singing throughout her life until the very end. Her relationship with music gave rise to several generations of musicians, including Ljova’s father, composer Alexander Zhurbin, the violist Yuri Gandelsman, violinists Natasha Sher and Johnny Gandelsman, and Ljova. Inna’s grandfathers also both loved to sing and passed along their love of Yiddish folk and Russian retro songs to Inna from an early age. The songs we play today will come from Ada’s repertoire, some of it rarely heard today, as well as those beloved and sung by Inna’s grandparents. Featuring Ljova on fadolín, Inna Barmash on vocals, Roman Samoletov on the Russian bayan, and Adam Fisher on cello.
