Simone Dinnerstein and Ljova present: Sybarite 5 in their debut at National Sawdust—-> Sybarite5 always moves forward, even when looking back to their classical roots. Inspired by J.S. Bach’s solo suites, Look Back / Move Forward assembles new suites for today. The centerpiece is a suite pulsing with energy and life commissioned by Sybarite5 from six composers: Kenji Bunch, Eric Byers, Mohammed Fairouz, Daniel Bernard Roumain, Michi Wiancko, & Lev “Ljova” Zhurbin, each asked to contribute one movement. The group’s favorite custom made suites – Radiohead transcriptions & Piazzolla Tangos – round out this eclectic mix. The Arizona Daily Star declared that Sybarite5 audiences should “expect an experience that will satisfy your inner rock star…” We’ll leave it at that.
02/10/16 Ljova Brooklyn, New York Old Stone House of Brooklyn United States
Time: 6:00pm. Admission: free. Age restrictions: All Ages. Address: 336 3rd Street. Ljova performs a solo fadolín/looper set for the opening of “Partners, Parents Pets: Contemporary Portraiture”, an art exhibition by artists Sophia Dawson, Jamie Diamond, Natalie Gruppuso, Meghan Keane, Iviva Olenick, Bayeté Ross Smith, and Mónika Sziládi — curated by Katherine Gressel. In celebration of Valentine’s Day, on February 10 the Old Stone House will open Partners, Parents, Pets: Contemporary Portraiture, a five-month exhibition exploring the nuances of different family relationships through diverse artistic approaches. Each artwork blurs boundaries between a traditional family portrait commission and the creative expression or social agenda of the artist. Together the works aim to raise such questions as: how does an artist’s portrait work for hire influence his/her personal work, or vice versa? How (and why) are artists choosing to either use, or consciously break away from, family portrait conventions to comment on the nature of their subjects and/or portraiture itself? Finally, who typically has access to getting their “family portrait” created and seen (and who ultimately decides how these subjects are represented?) More information

Time: 8:20pm. Age restrictions: All Ages. Address: 19 Regent St. Venue phone: +44 871 224 0240. FILM SCREENING: The European premiere of “Datuna: Portrait of America” at the Raindance Film Festival in London. In the film, directed by Brian Bayerl and featuring an original score by Ljova, we are introduced into the life of David Datuna, a Georgia-born artist who creates very distinctive pieces on national identity. Whilst following Datuna’s journey, we learn a lot about his background and past experiences that make him who he is today. Through innovative practices such as being the first contemporary artist to combine wearable technology into his work, and using different mediums in his creativity, he became a key figure in the industry, being compared to artists such as Andy Warhol. Much of the film revolves around his piece ‘Portrait of America’, which debuted at the National Portrait Gallery on President’s day. During this time, we see how passionate and dedicated Datuna is to his work, even when he gets diagnosed with stage 3 lung cancer; he continues working in the studio day in, day out, with his team who know nothing of his personal situation. The documentary also places emphasis on how hard to crack the arts industry is, as well as how much every piece of art means to its creator – it’s takeaway message: no matter what happens, never give up on your aspirations. Time: 9:30pm. Admission: $12, $15. Age restrictions: All Ages. Address: 425 LAFAYETTE STREET. Ljova and the Kontraband — is chamber-jam music for the remix generation. As if by alchemy, Eastern-European and Gypsy melodies, Latin rhythms, Jazz-inspired improvisations, and deeply rooted Classical forms are given new meanings in original compositions that fearlessly forge a new direction, with a nostalgic gaze towards the past.Since making its debut in June 2006, the ensemble has performed at venues such as New York’s Museum of Modern Art, The Kennedy Center in Washington DC, Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Brooklyn Academy of Music, where it was the opening musical guest of the Sundance@BAM Film Festival. The Kontraband is also a mainstay at New York’s legendary venue Joe’s Pub, and the Brooklyn-based club, Barbes. Founded by the maverick film composer, arranger, and violist Lev ‘LJOVA’ Zhurbin — hailed by Billboard magazine as one of New York’s fastest rising composers and instrumentalists — the ensemble also features his close collaborators on vocals, accordion, bass and percussion. Inspired by his collaborations with Yo-Yo Ma, Osvaldo Golijov, the Kronos Quartet, the rapper Jay-Z and others, Ljova’s compositions dazzle with intricate textures, odd rhythms and lilting melodies, creating music that is both fresh and timeless. The Kontraband’s acclaimed debut CD, Mnemosyne, was released in September 2008. ————————Winner of Argentina’s National Prize of the Arts Grant (Premio Fondo Nacional de las Artes). Since Jofre Romarion arrived in New York from Argentina, the bandonenista has taken his form of contemporary tango to some of the city’s most important venues such as Jazz Standard, City Center, and the New Jersey PAC.  Jofre was asked to take part in Rosie O’ Donnell Live (NBC) sharing the stage with world-renowned stars such as Liza Minelli, Alanis Morissette, Gloria Estefan, The Lombard Twins. Jofre is currently writing music for his Jofre Romarion New Tango Quartet, performing the Astor Piazzolla’s Concerto with symphonic orchestras all over the world and is member of the Fernando Otero Quartet, the Paquito D’ Rivera Jazz Band, the Eternal Tango Orchestra, Tango Connection, Octavio Brunetti Quintet and other ensembles. Jofre began his musical studies at the National University of San Juan Argentina, where he studied piano, composition, before eventually deciding to dedicate himself to the bandoneneon 1999.  In 2003, Juan Pablo gave his first performance  at the 1st International Festival of Chamber Music in Mendoza, playing Bach solos and Piazzolla solos for bandoneon. In 2004 Jofre received a grant from San Juan Mar del Plata SA and Auditorium Juan Victoria to study under bandonen0020006daster Daniel Binelli and Julio Pane in Buenos Aires.  Binelli writes of Juan Pablo, “(he is a) incredible musician, blessed with excellent skills to play the bandoneon.
